The question of the importance of principals in addressing the achievement gap came up recently at a Montgomery County Council Education Committee Meeting. I firmly believe we need to focus on the support we provide to our school leadership. They set the culture and expectations within the school building. If they flounder, their staff and students flounder. While "management" is Dr. Starr's responsibility, I am committed to ensuring our policies provide direct support and oversight to the leaders in our schools. And yes, that does mean principals should be held accountable for implementing and monitoring the initiatives that will meet the unique needs in their school communities.
