A piece of legislation was proposed a couple of years ago to make the Board of Education elected by district, similar to the County Council. Voters in each district would elect their district representative to the Board of Education. (Currently, the entire county votes for each seat on the Board of Education. The "district" refers to the requirement that the candidate reside in that district.) As the county PTA president at the time, I was not sold on the legislation. As a recent candidate, I saw how much time I campaigned outside my own district. It was a valuable experience. Nonetheless, I won my District 1. I'm still not sold on changing the way the Board of Education is elected. But if we want change (and I think change is good), then perhaps it's time to have that philosophical conversation again about how our Board of Ed is elected.
